A new beginning...

Here we go!!!
My first post on Wild Garden's Notebook.
I don't really know how or where to start so maybe we should just have a look on what we can do this weekend in the garden (between two showers!)

The last couple of weekends weren't the most sunniest England has seen. This weekend won't be really better. A little bird told me we might even see thunder over London and maybe hail.
On the bright side, Sunday's weather should be more enjoyable.
To make the most of it, here are some advices on what you can do in your garden :

  • Now is a good time to trim box hedges. It's better to do it on a cloudy day (lucky us!) and, if possible, in the morning. This way your cuts won't be scorched by the sun.
  • If you want to trim your hedges this weekend, please take care that there is no bird nests hidden inside.
  • Keep an eye on your plants for pests. Search for this bug on your aromatic plant : Chrysolina americana or Rosemary Beetle. I know, I know they are beautiful little metallised beetles. BUT they will devour your rosemary and your lavender without any hesitation. Have look here for a more detailed post on this lovely but nasty bug.
  • Chrysolina americana - RHS website
  • You can cut back Geranium phaeum and Geranium sylvaticum to encourage new shoots and maybe new flowers.
  • Keep deadheading roses to prolong flowering.

In your vegetable plot, it's time to :
  • Take good care of your tomatoes plants : feed them once every two weeks with a liquid fertiliser, tie them to a support, pinch out side shoots.
  • Saw new rows of radishes and salad leaves every week to ensure harvests all summer long.
  • Keep watering (if it's not raining enough of course!)
Finally, if you're feeling like going out, I recommend a little trip to the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden, near Southbank Center. Until September, you can visit this garden created in partnership with the Eden Project in Cornwall. Combining an orchard, a lawn, a wildflower area and vegetable plots, this rooftop garden is a great place to sit and relax.
Have a look at Southbank Center website for more details.

Enjoy your weekend and happy Father's Day to all the daddies !
